Japanese turn sex doll into dental-training robot

Tokyo university reveals realistic synthi-patient, claims "root canal" gags play no part in its appeal
Hanako Showa 2
Open wide and say, “Ahh -- this isn’t what I signed up for.”
Tokyo frequently presents a story that’s borderline fiction -- sex dolls for cavity-filling practice, puhlease -- but the pedigree of the new Hanako Showa 2 dental training robot tells us this is no product of a fevered imagination.
We previously saw big sister, plain Jane Hanako Showa, in early 2010, noting that the synthetic patient was being used in the Showa University dental school for more than simple caries-evacuation practice on her plumbed-in dentures.
That model even incorporated the concept of being female simply so junior dentists could learn not to accidentally fondle her breasts. We kid you not.

Silicone sheath

So, a year and a half later, little sis makes her bow sheathed not in her sibling’s PVC skin, but lifelike silicone, and sporting a host of internal modifications besides.
Hanako 2 genuinely is based on a Dutch Wife-style love doll from Orient Industry in Tokyo’s Taito Ward -- trust us, you don't want to click that link at work -- giving her a head start in the "realistic" stakes.
Aside from the human-feel skin on her face, mouth and tongue, she also contains robotics that allow her to mimic a range of motions, including sneezing and gagging when clumsy trainees dip their instruments too far into her gullet.

Talkative, ain’t she?

Hanako 2 also has the gift of the gab and can chat with her human companions about how she’s feeling, what ails her and, probably, how she can manage to speak with all that medical metal in her face.
Japan being Japan, there’s clearly no scope for the tried-and-trusted medical school technique of pulling passersby in off the street for a free "checkup."
Rather, Tokyo’s finest would-be dentists get to grapple with a chimera created originally for self-gratification, but packed instead with cutting-edge robotics and put to work in the name of a nation’s oral health. It’s a beautiful thing.
CNNGo Tokyo City Editor Mark Hiratsuka likes cricket, words and a few other fine endeavors besides.

Tokyo dentist makes your teeth look worse

Japanese yaeba teethIn Japan, crooked teeth are sometimes a sign that you might have ¥30,000 to spare.
Tourists come to Asia from all over the world to take advantage of affordable and top-quality cosmetic and plastic surgery procedures.
But a new fad in Japan has us wondering how many people will be flying in for supplemental dental work that promises to make teeth appear crooked.
Perhaps your folks spent thousands on fixing your wonky teeth all those years ago.
But chances are, if you were born in Japan, it was more like zero -- the lack of orthodontists is one reason why having a mouth full of straight teeth isn’t such a big deal here.
In fact, in some circles that goofy look is downright desirable, which leads us to the news that a Ginza-based dental clinic has just started supplying fake crooked teeth to those blessed with more traditionally “beautiful” pearly whites.

Grin and bare it

Dental Salon Plaisir says its Tsuke-yaeba -- or Stick-on Crooked Teeth -- will impart that desirable “imperfect” look to men and women alike, making them more attractive to the opposite sex.
The theory behind that slightly odd approach is that classic beauty tends to scare away timid suitors, whereas a more down-home look is easily approachable.
Similarly, some Japanese women have been reported to favor men wearing glasses, as the physical flaw has a comparable aphrodisiac effect.
Anyone seeking Tsuke-yaeba will need to fork out upwards of ¥30,000 ($390) and undergo a short procedure as a Plaisir dentist applies the plastic gnashers with glue. Naturally, they’re color-matched to your real teeth.

Here today ...

As for the advisability of the process, Tokyo orthodontist Masaru Iwatsuki has his doubts. “It’s a crazy idea,” he says. “Teeth have holes to let oxygen in. Covering them is bad for the tooth’s health.”
“Not that it matters, though,” he reckons. “It’s clearly a passing fad -- something that will be gone in six months.”

Taiwan to help set up dental research centre

MUMBAI: Government Dental College and Kaohsiung Medical University, Taiwan, will set up a research centre in Mumbai to improve geriatric dental treatment and develop a course on dental engineering.
The centre will be funded by the Taiwan government, which is interested in carrying out research in India.
It is the first time that the dental institute has partnered with a foreign medical schoolto carry out research
. "The patient care in India is rich and varied. It is the first time that we are partnering with an Indian institution," said Dr Cherin Lai from the department of anaerobic and oral microbial research centre of the Taiwan college.
Members from the university and the dental industry met Dr Mansingh Pawar, dean of Government Dental College and discussed issues concerning dentistry in India and Taiwan. "They were concerned about the expensive dental care in their country," said Dr Pawar.
The visiting academicians and dental practitioners were shocked to know our rates that patients were charged for various dental treatments. "When I told them we merely charged Rs 50 for an amalgam filling, they asked me, if I meant $1. They are very keen on making dental treatment in Taiwan affordable too," added Dr Pawar. Apart from carrying out joint research, the two institutes also decided to sign a memorandum for faculty and student exchange.
Two senior professors from the GDC will visit Kaohsiung Medical University in November and understand its working. The Taiwan government will fund the student exchange programme of the two institutes.
