About the Programme
The main thrust of research training in our college is built around the environment created by our Ph.D. program. The Oral Biology Ph.D. program trains the future researcher both in the basic sciences and the critical thinking skills required for a successful academic career. This program is directed by the meaningful involvement of the faculty within the College of Dentistry, but it is also truly multidisciplinary involving many adjunct faculty members in multiple colleges within the University. The objective of the Oral Biology Ph.D. curriculum is to support and encourage trainees to develop dissertation research projects that bridge the interfaces amongst the traditional approaches used to investigate human diseases. Curricular requirements are tailored to suit the needs of individual students. The following degree and training program options are available for incoming students: Ph.D. ProgramThis program includes a five-year study leading to a Ph.D. in oral biology. The major goal of the program is to prepare researchers and scholars for careers in either academia, such as academic biology or dentistry, or industry, particularly in oral health related fields. The emphasis throughout the program is on the application of modern biological approaches to the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of oral diseases, as well as the understanding of normal oral function. The minimum academic degree for entrance into the program is a Bachelor of Science degree. A graduate student who holds a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree and is pursuing the Ph.D. in Oral Biology may qualify for a training grant to fully support their studies for at least five years, if they are also a U.S. citizen and a permanent resident. Dentist Scientist Graduate ProgramUnderstanding the value of both graduate and clinical training, faculty in the College of Dentistry developed the curriculum for the integrated D.D.S./Ph.D. program. This is a seven-year program leading to a D.D.S./Ph.D. degree and is currently supported by a Comprehensive Training Grant in Oral and Craniofacial Sciences (CTOC). This program provides both tuition and stipend support to exceptional trainees who are driven to pursue both research and clinical careers. The seven year program incorporates Ph.D. training embedded within our standard dental curriculum. Approximately two students are admitted into the dual-degree program each year. Acceptance to both the D.D.S. and Oral Biology Ph.D. programs is essential for admission into this program. Students interested in this program should contact Dr. John Sheridan at ctoc@osu.edu or fill out this online form: CTOC Ph.D. Programs Form Dental Clinical Specialty/Ph.D. ProgramThe program provides research training to outstanding D.MD./D.D.S. post-graduates to obtain a Ph.D. degree. Advanced clinical residencies in some specialties integrated into Ph.D. training are available. A U.S. citizen and a permanent resident who holds a D.D.S. or D.M.D. degree and is pursuing training in an advanced clinical within the Oral Biology Ph.D. program may qualify for a training grant to fully support their studies for at least five years. Acceptance into both a specialty program and the Oral Biology Ph.D. program is essential for admission into this program. Post-Doctoral TraineesOutstanding Ph.D. graduates are recruited to engage in challenging research investigations in mentored laboratories. P.S.:- A student from India named POOJA MANEY is currently pursuing this programme. You can contact her at maney.3@osu.edu |
